About · Mychal Shaw

The future belongs to the storytellers.

Here's my origin arc.

Athlete, creative, entrepreneur, founder, engineer, organizer. Six arenas, one instinct: build the thing that should already have existed.

Athlete

Before I ever shipped a product, I learned the scoreboard doesn't care about your intentions.

Football, ages five to twenty. Fifteen seasons. Sport was the first system I had to read from the inside - you study the film, you find the gap, you run it again until it works. Nobody hands you a starting spot. You take reps until the reps take you.

It taught me the thing that shows up in every company I've built since: a team isn't the people on the roster. It's the people who show up when the drill is boring.

Carried forwardReps beat talent.

Creative

Football ended. The passion didn't. I picked up a camera.

Fifteen years of having somewhere to pour all of it, and then nowhere. There was a void, and I filled it with a lens. I learned to shoot, to frame, to cut - to express through a camera what I used to express on a field. I filmed and photographed artists across every genre, and found that reading a room works the same way reading a defense does: you look for what everyone else is missing.

I filed for MSM Media & Marketing at nineteen, while I was still playing. Creative direction, brand identity, photography, 2,300+ short-form videos. Attention is earned, never assigned - I learned to make things people stopped for, then the harder part, making things people acted on.

Five years behind a lens before a single line of code. That isn't the backstory to the technical work. It's the method.

Carried forwardAttention is earned, never assigned.

Entrepreneur

You can't fake a room. People either stay or they don't.

Marketing Director at Amplify Culture, 2021 to 2024. We were an events company built around nightlife - music, DJs, rooms across Kansas City - partnering with bars, clubs, and restaurants to build experiences that put the city's different scenes on the same floor. A scene isn't a demographic. It's a room, and somebody has to program it.

In 2024 we brought in Quincy Crutchfield as co-founder and turned that into Culture Club Creative Agency: everything we knew about curating and planning events, plus the marketing and strategy activations I'd been running. Content strategy, social accounts, brand identity. We'd launch a product into the market with Bud Light, host the room, shoot the photo and video, and hand the brand a content engine that kept running after we left.

Across three years of that work: 100+ events, 60M+ impressions, and $8M in revenue generated for clients - in the Kansas City market alone.

Client work teaches you speed, and it teaches you limits. You can make somebody else's thing excellent. You can't make it yours.

Carried forwardOwn the whole stack.

Founder

I stopped building for clients and started building for communities.

UWAZI.AI exists because ballot language is confusing on purpose, and confusion is a policy choice that benefits somebody. Founding it meant trading a brief for a thesis: find a community underserved by an existing system, and build the infrastructure they were never given.

Voters. City governments. Black founders. Parishes. Same pattern, five times over.

Carried forwardBuild for a community, not a client.

052020 self-taught · Raia G1.0 · KOVA, 2026

Technologist

I don't wait for the right tool to exist.

I taught myself to code in 2020, during the pandemic, and never stopped. Raia G1.0 is a proprietary civic AI model I built from scratch - it powers UWAZI.AI and Jamii. Not wrappers. Purpose-built civic intelligence. KOVA followed in 2026: an entire company operating system, shipped solo.

The Uwazi App. UWAZI Engage. Jamii. KOVA. The BIN app. KC AI Club. 1Flock. Designed, branded, and coded end to end. Engineering wasn't a credential I was handed. It was a discipline I chose, in the dark, because communities needed what didn't yet exist.

Carried forwardIf the tool doesn't exist, that's the job.

Community Builder

The first thing every member declares is what they give.

Black Innovation Collective, co-founded in Kansas City in 2026 with eight others. All In Favor and the monthly civic listening sessions at Keystone. Give First. Build Together. Own What You Create.

This is where the line stops being a line. Everything before it was one person getting better at building. This part only works if it leaves my hands.

Where it lands

Every one of those arenas taught the same lesson in a different accent: the system is never neutral, and somebody has to build the version that includes you.

Who I am

Mychal Shaw - AI strategy consultant in Kansas City.

I'm Mychal Shaw, an AI strategy consultant, full-stack engineer, and founder based in Kansas City, Missouri. I've spent nine years doing Kansas City marketing agency work - 85+ events, $200K+ in client revenue, campaigns for Google, Academy Bank, Anheuser-Busch, and Big Brothers Big Sisters - and the last several years building AI products end to end.

That combination is the whole practice. As an AI strategy consultant I don't hand over a roadmap and leave: I've shipped three production AI platforms myself - UWAZI.AI for civic listening, KOVA, and 1Flock - so the strategy is grounded in architecture, cost, and timelines that hold up. And because the marketing side lives under the same roof, the thing we build actually gets launched.

Most of my work happens in and around Kansas City, with founders, local brands, and civic and public-sector organizations adopting AI responsibly - plus national clients who want a KC point of view.

About

BUILDING WHAT OTHERS/won't.

"I don't wait for the right tool to exist. I build it - from scratch, across every layer of the stack."

I'm Mychal Shaw - a serial founder, self-taught AI engineer, and culture-driven marketing strategist rooted in Kansas City, MO. I taught myself to code during the pandemic and never stopped.

Every product I ship follows the same pattern: I find a community underserved by existing systems - voters, city governments, Black founders, companies, parishes - and I build the infrastructure they were never given. I design it, brand it, and code it myself, end to end.

My flagship, UWAZI.AI, runs on Raia G1.0 - a proprietary civic AI model I built. Raia also powers Jamii, my B2B platform for cities. These aren't wrappers. They're purpose-built civic intelligence systems.

Outside of AI, I've spent 11 years driving results for brands from startups to Fortune 1000s - 60M+ impressions and $8M in revenue generated for clients through culture-driven strategy, creative direction, and community activation.

One founder. Four very different builds.

The mark of a serial entrepreneur isn't a long resume - it's the same instinct applied to different problems. Each of these started as a gap nobody else was closing, and each shipped.

Consumer civic education

Uwazi App

2024 - Present

The gap: A voter opens their ballot and finds fourteen names they've never heard of and three amendments written in statute language. Existing tools either assume you already understand how government works, or they tell you who to vote for.

The build: Nonpartisan means the interface can never rank, score, or imply. No recommended badges, no sentiment coloring on candidates, no ordering that reads as preference. Every affordance that would normally help a user decide was replaced with one that helps them understand instead.

Conversational civic AI

Ask Uwazi

2025 - Present

The gap: The design problem is trust, not conversation. A civic chatbot that hallucinates a polling place is worse than no chatbot at all.

The build: The architecture is the UX. Haiku classifies intent, Sonnet answers, Opus handles complex reasoning, and web search is domain-locked to .gov sources behind a tiered allowlist. The interface surfaces its own sourcing rather than asking the user to trust a black box.

Community platform

Black Innovators Network

2026 - Present

The gap: Black founders in Kansas City were connecting in group chats and event lobbies, so the network existed but nothing about it was searchable, durable, or compounding.

The build: One dark, red-accented mobile surface where every module earns its tab: a directory that reads like a real profile instead of a row, a feed scoped to channels rather than an endless timeline, events that end in an RSVP, and a wins wall that makes momentum visible. Founding-member and role badges are structural, not decorative - they tell you who's in the room before you ask.

KC AI Club

2024 - Present

The gap: Kansas City had AI meetups, but no standing place where builders actually shipped work, critiqued prompts, and leveled up together.

The build: A monthly build-and-share club where the deliverable matters more than the deck. Every session ends with something live: a workflow, a prompt, a prototype, or a teardown. The community is the product.

Core Philosophy

The Modern
Renaissance.

I sit at the intersection of inclusive collaboration, community building, systems change, and cultural innovation - building a modern renaissance where code, culture, community, and innovation are not just accessible, but invested in.

C

Code

Self-taught. Full-stack. Raia G1.0 - a proprietary civic AI model built from scratch. 7 production applications shipped solo. Engineering isn't a credential I was handed. It's a discipline I chose, in the dark, during a pandemic, because communities needed what didn't yet exist.

C

Culture

Nine years of culture-driven work before a single line of code. Creative direction, brand strategy, events, photography, video. Culture isn't context for my technical work - it's the foundation. Every product I build is shaped by the communities I came from, not the ones I was trying to enter.

C

Community

Black Innovators Network. Power, Policy & Progress. 100+ events. The first act of every BIN member is to declare what they give - not what they need. Community isn't an audience strategy. It's the architecture. "Give First. Build Together. Own What You Create."

C

Civic Innovation

UWAZI.AI. Jamii. Uwazi.gov. Democracy made legible. Policy made actionable. Systems changed from the inside. AI built not to replace community judgment - but to amplify it. Because the most dangerous technology isn't the kind that fails. It's the kind that works perfectly for the wrong people.

Manifesto

Five things I believe.

01

Culture is not a lane. It's the whole road.

"The best technology in the world fails when it doesn't understand the people it's built for."

When the tech industry says "culture fit," they usually mean the opposite of what I mean. I mean: do you understand how people actually live? Do you know how information travels in a neighborhood that doesn't trust institutions? Do you know how a family makes a decision when the system has lied to them before? You can't build for communities you haven't listened to. I came from culture. That's not a backstory - it's a methodology.

02

Access without investment is still exclusion.

"Opening the door isn't enough. Someone has to care what happens after people walk through it."

We talk a lot about making things accessible - accessible tech, accessible information, accessible civic systems. But access is the floor, not the ceiling. The real question is: are you investing? Investing time, resources, and genuine commitment into the communities your product claims to serve? That's the difference between a press release and a movement. Every product I build starts with that question, not ends with it.

03

The best engineers come from everywhere except where you're looking.

"I taught myself to code during a pandemic. Nobody invited me into this space. I built the door."

The pipeline problem in tech is real, but it's not what people think it is. The problem isn't that people like me don't exist - it's that the industry built its talent infrastructure around institutions that historically excluded us. I am proof that the best builders aren't always produced by the best schools. They're produced by the most urgent problems. Give someone a reason to build and they'll teach themselves everything they need to know.

04

Democracy is a design problem.

"If your civic system is confusing on purpose, that's a feature - not a bug - for the people who benefit from low participation."

Ballot language, policy documents, legislative records - they're written to be misunderstood by the people most affected by them. That's not an accident. UWAZI.AI and Jamii exist because I believe that if you make the information clear, people will participate. They always have. The barrier isn't apathy. It's complexity engineered as a gatekeeping mechanism. I'm building the tools to dismantle that - one plain-language policy summary at a time.

05

This is a renaissance, not a moment.

"The Harlem Renaissance wasn't an event. It was an ecosystem. We're building the next one."

What happened in Harlem in the 1920s wasn't a trend. It was a deliberate, collective act of creation - writers, artists, musicians, thinkers, and builders choosing to invest in each other and produce something the world had never seen before. That's what I'm building in Kansas City in 2026. Not a startup ecosystem. A renaissance. Where code is art, community is infrastructure, and innovation is an act of liberation. The geography is different. The urgency is the same.
